Week 1 Reflection

I learned a lot during week 1. To start, I learned about the cycle of assessment. You start off by reflecting on change and planning for improvement, then you teach, then you gather and assess student work, and then you interpret evidence and identify outcomes, and then it continues. The cycle of assessment is a never-ending cycle. I feel that this will help me when I have my own classroom because it will give me a place to start with assessments and prepares me for what will come next. I then learned about why we assess children. I never really thought about why until this class. I think it is very important that we monitor the childrens development and learning in our classroom. If we are not monitoring the learning then how will we as teachers know if the children are understadning the material or if they are struggling. I think that the main reason we assess children is so that we can help them and it also helps us as teachers! Lastly, I  learned that there are different types of assessments. There are Diagnostic Assessments, Formative Assessments, Summative Assessments, and Norm-referenced tests. One of the assessments I plan to use in my future classrooms is formative assessments. I will do this by providing my children with an exit ticket at the end of the lesson. This will help me as a teacher to understand where my children are and if they are where they need to be with that specific lesson or if I need to go back to it and teach it more. Another assessment that will be used in my future classroom is a summative assessment. If I have a class that is in third grade or above they will take the PSSA's and that is a summative assessment. Overall, I feel that I learned a lot about assessment and the types of assessment during week 1, and I am excited to use it in my future classroom!

  1. I think using exit tickets is a great idea for a formative assessment. These types of assessments alleviate stress from students during assessments because they may not even know they are being assessed, but the information from the assessment will be essential to planning future lessons. Great post!

  2. Bailey, I talked about how I'm going to use formative assessments in my future classroom as well! The example I mentioned was using end-of-lesson worksheets to see where my students are at and what they may need more support with. I also love the idea of exit tickets! They will definitely help you see what your students have learned and let you know if you need to revisit a topic. I really like the examples of assessments you included, the exit ticket is so cute! Great blog post :)
